Our treadmill is pup-powered (mechanical) and designed exclusively for dogs to use.
It's similar to a human treadmill, except there's NO electricity. We attach a lead to the dog's harness which keeps them in place, allowing their steps to propel the machine's belt forward.
Then, it's almost exactly like walking on solid ground, where each dog can run, trot, walk, start, or stop as they please. We offer a little encouragement when necessary and that's it!
Yes! We chose to start this business because of how safe these treadmills are, especially compared to other dog service options. Of course, we pride ourselves on transparency and acknowledge that nothing is ever 100% risk-free so we'd like to share our three biggest concerns and how we reduce risk:
Exhaustion/Dehydration
With our one-on-one personalized sessions, we are able to carefully monitor each dog for any signs of exhaustion or dehydration. If a dog shows any warning signs, we immediately remove the dog from the treadmill. Additionally, we pride ourselves on ensuring that every dog understands they are in control and can start and stop the machine, which helps keep dogs safe.
Long Nails
We ask that each dog's nails are trimmed. Nails that are too long may pose a hazard on the slatted belt. If a dog arrives for a session with nails that are too long, we reschedule the session for a later date.
Dog's Position
The dog must remain within the partitions throughout the whole session. We ensure the dog's position is within the safe zone at the start of each session. We lock the treadmill's belt, attach the lead to the dog's harness, and ensure the lead keeps the dog within the safe zone (on both on the front side and the rear side). With some of our speedy runners, you might even see two additional straps attached to the front of the machine to provide extra safety and security, ensuring the dog remains in the proper position.
We encourage dogs to move with toys, treats, and clapping and cheering. Intro sessions usually involve a combination of a few different tactics, while our normal sessions often require little to none (the joy of limitless exercise!).
Because this is an unfamiliar and wild new machine, we offer complimentary intro sessions to introduce you and your dog to Skedaddle Studio. Once your pup is comfortable on the machine and understands that they control their start/stop, we allow them to "graduate" to regular sessions.
We realized that individualized, climate-controlled exercise could help a lot of dogs and their owners. Skedaddle is designed to be an alternative for those who cannot or will not use options like doggy daycare, dog walkers, or dog parks.
While interviewing hundreds of local dog owners, we consistently heard of challenges about concerns that they were often unable to fully address. Below is a chart that outlines some of the most frequent responses:
We made sure that addressing every one of these concerns was built into our DNA and was not an afterthought. And so, this is our long-winded way of saying:
Skedaddle is good for all dogs. Skedaddle is especially good for those with owners who feel like their concerns aren't sufficiently met.
Of course! We're insured through Pet Care Insurance beyond the minimum requirements (including additional Pet Protection Coverage and Veterinarian Expense Reimbursement).
We're also certified by the American Red Cross in First Aid for Dogs and Cats and keep our own first aid kit on hand.
